The Origin of The Modern Day Cell Phone
These days, cell phones are considered on of life’s necessities. It isn’t uncommon to see people driving old beat up clunkers while talking on a cell phone. Prices today are so affordable that nearly everyone has a cell phone regardless of their income level. Most people wouldn’t know what to do if they had to survive without a cell phone. They have become a necessary part of our daily lives.
Most people don’t realize that cell phones have been in existence for a very long time. However, it wasn’t until recently that they became popular with just about everyone. For something that is so engrained in our everyday lives few people understand how these tiny devices actually work.
The earliest form of cell phone was called a Cave radio telephone. Bell Labs eventually developed cellular telephony and create base stations for their use. This was primarily a military device used by soldiers in the field. Today’s cellular phones use radio frequencies to broadcast their signals to base stations called cell towers that are placed in designated areas to help send and receive signals.
Base stations use computer codes to monitor incoming signals. Each base station has a maximum amount of bandwidth assigned to it in a specific area. It’s in the base stations where incoming signals are processed before they are forwarded to the cell phone of the receiver. It is then the receiver’s cell phone that gathers the transmitted date before decoding it and translating it to the original caller’s voice.
Cell phones are no longer used just for voice communication. Cell phones can be used as extensions of popular office equipment devices such as a fax machines and computers. With this technology, it is possible to use your cell phone to surfing the web, send emails, get driving directions with voice prompts, and communicate with someone halfway around the globe.
Cell phones have had a major impact on modern day living. People wonder how they ever got along without them.
